Your Real West Coast Travel and Drive Guide

Hokitika Gorge
Westland, West Coast, New Zealand.

A must see experience the Hokitika Gorge is a real West Coast gem. Awesome, incredible, superb, fantastic, and yes the waters really are that blue.

Hokitika Gorge
The fantastic Hokitika Gorge.

Just 25 kilometres east of Hokitika township at the end of the Kowhitirangi road sits the Hokitika Gorge Scenic Reserve.

The walk is an easy, short return loop that is well worth the 20 to 30 minutes time. Beginning from the car park follow the signs down through podocarp and hardwood forest to the swingbridge that crosses the gorge.

On the way down there are ample opportunitys for excellent photographs of the bridge set between the steep rock faced gorge with the blue green waters seemingly frozen in time, waiting for your arrival at the bridge.

From the bridge you can get excellent views of the steep rock face of the gorge and the waters sedately flowing beneath you. At the end of the bridge follow the track to the left which leads you down to the rocks that line the gorge.

At this point there are good views into the gorge and back under the bridge or over it to the lookout where you first stopped to grab that awesome view.

Welcome to the “real” West Coast ... enjoy your stay.
