Like most of New Zealand the West Coast is a rugged, narrow strip of land where the weather can change dramatically and very quickly, please be prepared before venturing out.
Look after Yourself
- The shortest walk in our wonderful forests and bush could see you turning back as heavy rain or a sudden cold blast moves in. Always carry extra warm clothing and a shower proof coat or jacket.
- Ensure that your footware is comfortable and adequate for the task. Sturdy shoes or boots are recommended for most walks over a few minutes and always on lengthy tracks and trails.
- Do not take unnecessary risks. Stay to the tracks and paths. They are there to guide you safely through our wonderful scenery and forest. Wandering from these lanes can be dangerous and in many places is just down right foolish.
- On the longer walks pack a small first aid kit and take some food and drink with you.
- Do not undertake lengthy walks or day trips alone, tramp with company.
- When undertaking any lengthy walk (day trip or longer track) always leave your intentions with a reliable contact. Your accommodation provider, at one of the many DOC offices or other information centers would be a great idea. And do let that contact know when you return.
