West Coast Walks and Tracks

Most of the Walks and Tracks included in our guides are easy to moderate in nature and offer visitors to the region a few minutes to an hour or two in our forests and bush, the most scenic of New Zealand.

Look after the Coast

  • Our native plants, wildlife, natural features and historic sites are protected.
  • Take your rubbish away with you for proper disposal.
  • Do not light fires except where facilities are provided at designated camping sites.
  • Bury any toilet waste.
  • Keep our Streams and Lakes Clean.

Out Door New Zealand
Buller, Grey District, Westland. West Coast. New Zealand

The West Coast is a rugged, narrow strip of land where the weather can change dramatically and very quickly, please be prepared before venturing out.

Look after Yourself

  • The shortest walk in our wonderful forests and bush could see you turning back as heavy rain or a sudden cold blast moves in. Always carry extra warm clothing on day trips or longer walks.
  • Ensure that your footware is comfortable and adequate for the task. Sturdy shoes or boots are recommended for most walks over a few minutes and always on lengthy tracks and trails.
  • Do not take unnecessary risks. Stay to the tracks and paths. Wandering from these lanes can be dangerous and in many places is just down right foolish.
  • On the longer walks pack a small first aid kit and take some food and drink with you.
  • Do not undertake lengthy walks or day trips alone, tramp with company.
  • When undertaking any lengthy walk (day trip or longer track) always leave your intentions with a reliable contact, and do let that contact know when you return.
