A Mayoral Welcome
to Greymouth and Grey District West Coast, New Zealand
From His Worship, Tony Kokshoorn,
Mayor Grey District Council.
Welcome to the West Coast and Greymouth.
Often Greymouth is viewed as being Lake Brunner, Shantytown and the Brunner Mine Site but we have so many other attractions to offer and adventures to encounter. The Grey District walks and tracks are numerous, yet little known. Our historic townships and places are spread across the region yet seldom seen or visited despite the fact that you can drive around the entire region in one day.
Most visitors to the wider Coast region have heard of Punakaiki, the Glaciers and other major attractions north and south, and are here to visit these Gems in the West Coasts crown. But how many visitors have heard of all the other places that the Grey District and Coast have to offer.
How many visitors to the Grey District have seen or heard of the Arnold River Dam or experienced the natural beauty and glory that is the Arnold River Scenic Reserve. Is it less than the number who have experienced Point Elizabeth, Coal Creek Falls or the Greymouth Piers. Perhaps it is more than those who have seen the Cobden lagoon and bird life that abounds within five minutes of Greymouth CBD or more than those who have seen and experienced the historic beauty and wonder of Woods Creek or Nelson Creek.
Grey District Mayor, Mr Tony Kokshoorn. Yet every one of these places is within 45 minutes drive time of the Greymouth rail station, and can be easily accessed.
Too often all that is the Grey District is dismissed or ignored by those who should know better than to encourage lengthy travels on roads that wind and undulate along our glorious coast line, or follow rivers as they carve their way through and around our majestic mountain ranges, however westcoastdriveguide does not dismiss or ignore these Gems.
Yes Lake Brunner, Shantytown and the Brunner Mine Site may well be jewels in the Grey District Crown but the Grey District Crown has so much more to offer the discerning visitor. Most visitors soon discover they have to slow down in order to safely drive the length and breadth of the Coast, so put that extra time to good use and get to know the Real Grey District and the Real West Coast.
Wishing you safe and happy travels,
Tony Kokshoorn
Mayor Grey District.
