Freedom Camping Policies.
on the West Coast of New Zealand
Our three District Councils have individual policies on Freedom Camping. These are designed to encourage the use of Camping Grounds and Facilities, while recognising that some visitors to the West Coast are choosing overnight camping as their preferred accommodation.
Please respect our paradise and dispose of all waste properly not in our waterways, not in our forests and not around our region.
Buller District Council
Freedom Camping Policy.
The Buller District Council has adopted the Buller District Council Freedom Camping Bylaw 2011 which will come into force on 2 May 2011.
Under the Bylaw freedom camping is allowed in Buller for self contained vehicles certified against NZS5465:2001, for up to three days per calendar month in any single location, provided you do not camp:
- within 500 metres of a registered camping ground;
- at any of the prohibited areas listed in Schedule A of the Bylaw;
- at any area where “No Camping” signs are displayed.
Copies of the Bylaw can be viewed at Council offices in Westport and Reefton. Copies can be obtained from Council offices or you can read the Bylaw at the Buller District Council web site,

Grey District Council
Freedom Camping Policy.
This policy is to promote safe and environmentally friendly overnight camping for self-contained motor-homes and caravans.
Recognising that some visitors to our district choose to travel and stay in their own self contained vehicles, it is, however, necessary to provide for basic, practical measures that enhance the personal safety of travellers, provide for the protection of our environment and ensure that the rights and lifestyle of the local community are protected.
"Travellers and campers are strongly encouraged to use camping grounds and other accommodation facilities as much as possible."

Westland District Council
Freedom Camping Policy.
Westland District Council's policy is designed to encourage travellers and campers to use camping grounds and other accommodation facilities as much as possible.
This policy recognises that some visitors to our District are choosing overnight camping as their preferred accommodation. It also recognises the economic and social benefit campers bring to our District.
The intent of this policy is to encourage camping travellers while eliminating the detrimental environmental effects of discarded rubbish and human waste.
